SPARC Score predictive WIDA correlation, customizable conversations, new activities, and older newcomer updates
At Joy School English, we believe learning works best when it’s fun, engaging, and—most importantly—effective. That’s why we’re constantly improving. Here’s a peek at some of the new and exciting features customers will see this fall:
1. SPARC speaking proficiency score: improved tracking, predictive of WIDA ACCESS outcomes
Our trusty SPARC Score just got an upgrade! It now tracks oral language growth at the school, class, and student levels—so you can see progress wherever it’s happening.
But here’s the real headline: a recent independent study found that the SPARC Score is a strong predictor of results on English Language Proficiency assessments like WIDA ACCESS. In fact, students who used Joy School English at recommended levels saw a 55% improvement in their WIDA ACCESS scale scores. That’s proof that more minutes = more progress.
2. Upgraded Kady Chain conversations – now with custom prompts
Practice makes progress—but practice should also feel real. Our AI-powered Kady Chain conversations are now fully customizable, letting teachers set chat time limits, choose the prompts students practice with, and even review recorded conversations.
Students get a safe, supportive space to try out real conversations. Teachers get more control and insight. Everybody wins.
3. Fun new activities
We’ve added engaging new activities that make language learning feel like play:
- Undercover Story – Students follow a simple sequence of pictures while listening to the story, then retell it in their own words.
- Speaker Speeder – A high-energy challenge where students practice listening to and repeating conversational phrases.
- Value Animations – New Interactive “choose your path” scenarios that show kids how good choices lead to positive outcomes.
4. Updates for older newcomers
Older elementary students learning English deserve tools that meet them where they are. That’s why our Older Newcomer course now includes:
- A placement test designed specifically for the Older Newcomer course (so they start at the right spot right away).
- More age-appropriate fiction and nonfiction books that keep them engaged and motivated.
Because older kids learning English aren’t just catching up—they’re moving forward.
